A/N: Very slightly (as in one word) revised version of a 'fic submitted to [livejournal.com profile] fma_fic_contest for the "fish" prompt. (It actually won -- ye gods and little fishes!) Since water is one of the essentials of a Chinese garden and ponds with goldfish a common design element, I had yet another excuse to stud a 'fic with foreign words and idioms. A/N: I was going to submit this to [livejournal.com profile] fma_fic_contest for the "canon couple" prompt, but sadly it turned out not to fit the criteria. Ah, well. The title is taken from a line in Richard Sheridan's comedy of manners The Rivals ("He is the very pine-apple of politeness!"), which also gave us the immortal Mrs. Malaprop. A/N: The title for this one comes from Henry Augustin Beers's sappy poem, "On a Miniature" and the inspiration from rereading the slightly overwrought prose of Baroness Orczy's Scarlet Pimpernel (though the heroine thereof is less inclined to faint than rush off to save the hero, thank goodness). Shannon and Dean Hale, Rapunzel's Revenge (illustrated by Nathan Hale)
WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE: Rapunzel, for horse-thieving, kidnapping, jail-breaking, and using her hair in a manner other than nature intended! Once upon a time there lived in a grand villa with her mother, Gothel, a very pretty, very venturesome, very, very bored little girl named Rapunzel. On her twelfth birthday she climbed over the wall surrounding the villa and discovered not only that she had been stolen from her real mother, but that Gothel was a tyrant bent on enslaving the entire frontier with her growth magic, which can provide a bumper harvest or prevent a crop from sprouting. Imprisoned in a tower for her defiance, Rapunzel plotted her revenge, waiting for the day when her braids would be long enough to lasso the top of a neighboring tree ...

弓 きいろ [Yumi Kiiro], Library Wars: Love and War 1
In the future, Japan's federal government imposes censorship of all media, backed up by a Media Betterment Task Force which confiscates unsuitable materials from bookstores and libraries by force if necessary. And it is necessary, because local governments have armed librarians under the Library Freedom Act to protect the public's right to read. Inspired by an encounter with a member of the Library Defense Force, Kasahara Iku has made it into basic training on the strength of her athleticism and dedication to the cause, but her instructing sergeant seems to have it in for her, her parents don't know she's chosen so perilous a career, and she can't even shoot straight. Sometimes only the memory of her hero and the slim possibility of finding him and telling him how much his intervention meant to her keeps her going ...

Read more... )I'll probably give the next volume or two a try on the grounds that armed librarians are cool, but unless the material gets a little more self-aware or takes a left turn into originality, I don't think I'm likely to follow this one far.

Dagnabit. My pre-order of v. 6 of the Pumpkin Scissors manga was just canceled, evidently because Del Rey has removed it from their publication schedule. Growl, mutter, mourn. I'd been hoping against hope that the translation would continue, but since it doesn't seem to be all that popular on this side of the pond ...

On the other hand, I also hear that Tokyopop will finally release the fourth and fifth Full Metal Panic light novels as a single volume next February. Yay! I'd given up on ever seeing any more of these, either, despite the popularity of the franchise. They're among the better written (and certainly among the better translated!) Japanese light novels I've read. Keeping my fingers crossed that the upcoming product retains the good qualities of its predecessors ...

ETA: Barebones Amazon listing for the latter!

Hey, does anyone remember what happened to that letter from Trisha Pinako gave Ed to give Hohenheim? Was that dangling plot participle ever resolved -- and if so, when? You'd think I wouldn't lose track of these things, being an English major, but I do. [hangs head in shame]

Pairing(s): Canon 'ships.
Rating: T (Oreldo doesn't go any lower)
Word Count: 300
Warnings: None. Takes place during the duel at the ball.
A/N: Written for a fandom that needs more love -- unfortunately, I think I need more canon before I can start imagining my own plots, but given that the anime concluded with the ball arc and Del Rey's release of the manga is proceeding at a glacial pace, that ain't going to happen any time soon. The fun here was writing character haiku: taking the existing concepts and paring them down to essentials in the appropriate voices. Concrit welcomed with three hots and a cot. When young and old in circle around the firebrands close;
When the girls are weaving baskets and the lads are shaping bows ...
With weeping and with laughter still is the story told,
How well Horatius kept the bridge in the brave days of old.

-- Macaulay, Horatius

Forget homunculi -- these days, when Ed visits Central, children ten times more persistent hound him. Tell us about the monster on the island! Tell how you lost your watch in Rush Valley! Tell about the battle on the train! Reticence fires their imaginations; rebuffs fall on selectively deaf ears. Ask your father. Ask your mother (and I didn't lose it -- it was stolen). Ask your uncle -- no, not your Uncle Roy! All right, listen, here's what really happened ...

Time has already cast its glamor over his youth; his best hope for theirs is to transmute legend into wisdom. Listen. Listen.

Word Count: ~3200 (for this part; ~8900 overall thus far)
Rating: PG-13 (for language and violence)

A/N: Part three of a four-part novella I drafted as an entry in the 2008 Ed/Winry Fire and Ice Challenge, but was unable to complete in time. (Part 1 may be found here and part 2 here.) Previously on An Inconvenient Season, a thuggish individual broke into the West City automail clinic where Winry was working alone; Ed, noticing something amiss as he came to pick her up, has just charged to her rescue. A/N: Part two of a novella I first conceived as an entry in the 2008 Ed/Winry Fire and Ice Challenge, but was unable to complete in time. (Part 1 may be found here.) When we last left our heroes, Winry had just encountered an unpleasant intruder in the West City automail clinic where she works, but don't expect an immediate resolution to her plight.
