A/N: Written in response to [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog's Don't Forget Challenge. Unbeta'd and likely to mutate in small ways before it goes to archive. Concrit welcomed with scenes from my anecdotage!

When young and old in circle around the firebrands close;
When the girls are weaving baskets and the lads are shaping bows ...
With weeping and with laughter still is the story told,
How well Horatius kept the bridge in the brave days of old.

-- Macaulay, Horatius

Forget homunculi -- these days, when Ed visits Central, children ten times more persistent hound him. Tell us about the monster on the island! Tell how you lost your watch in Rush Valley! Tell about the battle on the train! Reticence fires their imaginations; rebuffs fall on selectively deaf ears. Ask your father. Ask your mother (and I didn't lose it -- it was stolen). Ask your uncle -- no, not your Uncle Roy! All right, listen, here's what really happened ...

Time has already cast its glamor over his youth; his best hope for theirs is to transmute legend into wisdom. Listen. Listen.

The "No not Roy!" thing makes me think that a rivalry will develop between the two. I imagine a lot of stories are interrupted with "That's not what Uncle Ed/Roy said!!"

Very sweet! It made me smile.

I suspect Uncle Roy is always aware of his audience when he tells a story. :-) Also that Aunt Riza, when appealed to, gives a much drier, more factual, and ultimately less entertaining account of any given event (except when hanging out with Aunt Winry and Granny Pinako, at which point any unlucky males close enough to eavesdrop run for their lives :-).

...and forget it if Mr. Garfiel happens to be visiting, because the girl talk then...whooo!

AND YAY FOR TAKING MY LITTLE CHALLENGE. I love it. *beams*

Okay, now I want to write the first meeting between Garfiel and Granny ... :-)

I was challenged the other day to write the first meeting of Fuu and Granny...which, of course, couldn't be canon (*pouts*) but might still be fun.

Huzzah for AU? Maybe they met when they were both much younger, and he was in Amestris on a training journey or something -- I mean, he speaks pretty fluent Amestrian, after all ...

Oh, but we wanted them to scandalize the children Ed and Ran Fan (Ling, Winry and Al would be far too understanding, one thinks).

Drat. Another brilliant idea brought to wrack on boundary conditions.

Surely there's an A.R. somewhere I can use....

Well if Aunt Riza isn't working for them, I'm sure Uncle Alex Armstrong has a tale or two to tell them. I'm sure he has a few stories Roy and Ed would rather he not get into...

Children run screaming toward Uncle Alex; the adults take advantage of the cacophony to sneak away ...

That or Uncle Alex is sitting crossed legged on the floor with the kids listening to the stories, which suddenly seems as likely to me as him being up and acting all the action out.

Kids mountaineering all over him the while, perhaps? :-)

Awwww, this was lovely. I just adore stories where Ed gets to be the wolder, wise one. :)

It's gotta happen eventually (though I can hear various characters prognosticating to the contrary). :-)
