it would help if I liked literature from that time period but in all honesty it's not my favorite

I feel the same way about the 18th century. I forced myself through a graduate seminar when I thought I might still be going to be a professor, because early survey courses run through that, but ugh. Although I did enjoy this exchange between Boswell and Dr. Johnson after one of their club meetings:
Dr. Johnson: "Well, sir, we had good talk!"
Boswell: "Yes, sir: you tossed and gored several persons."
