On the way in to work this morning I ran into the manager of the Rare Books floor operation upstairs (I work downstairs with the rest of technical processing) and asked him whether it was possible to get some of the comic books we've acquired transferred into the medieval and Renaissance collection I'm working on for the next two years -- you know, just to add a little interest. He chuckled, and we briefly discussed the small but varied selection of graphic novels and critical works the library has (sufficiently varied that they're having a difficult time figuring out how to high-concept to the outside world on our web site). He added, however, that they're planning an exhibit in the fall, along with a speaker series ... and that they're hoping to invite Neil Gaiman. I told him he should charge admission for that one (we need a new roof, among other things). Boy, I hope they pull it off; I'd give a lot to hear the man speak in an academic setting. Further bulletins as events warrant ...

In other news, my copy of Naomi Novik's Victory of Eagles arrived, and I'm about a third of the way in. She's handling the consequences left over from Empire of Ivory very well, both in terms of plot and of characterization. It's fun to watch Temeraire figure out politics; his story is further advanced than Laurence's at the moment, but I'll be intrigued to see what Novik has in store for our favorite captain, the poor sod ...

Gah! Victory of Eagles is in hardback. Oh well, I'll just have to wait for it to come out in paperback to read it. Glad it's reading well so far though.

The good thing about hardbacks, though, is that libraries are quicker to pick them up. God bless McNaughton!

About midway through now, due to having no time to read last night -- I swear, I want to give Iskierka a good box around the ears for being bloody stupid. Even her current predicament is unlikely to teach her that her every whim is right.
