Tuesday's Word Count:
1139 (first draft of an untitled novella in the "House of Anubis" fandom)Sample Text:
With the flick of a finger Rufus lifted the silver catch that secured the box's lid. His opponents took the warning; with false cheer they assured the waiter that they needed nothing else. He departed and Rufus poured three half-cups of coffee with a show of benignity utterly alien to his purpose. "I'm not a religious man -- well, not conventionally religious," he said, "but there's a passage in the ninth of Ecclesiastes that's been running in my head: 'I saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, for time and chance happeneth to them all.'" He set the pot aside. "And I think it was an American who added, 'But that's the way the smart money bets.'"Still productive, but very rough work this round. The inside of my viewpoint character's head is irritatingly difficult to capture properly. Nevertheless, onward -- I've got a page or so of outline left before I'll have to stop and backbone for a bit.
"Damon Runyan," said Fabian. Rufus and Nina both stared at him; his shoulders hunched in an apologetic shrug. "I read it somewhere," he mumbled.
