"Before you do anything rash," he said, removing a small Egyptian faience box from his pocket and setting it on the table, "understand that I can and will kill everyone in this room." He touched the lion-headed figure worked in orange and gold on the box's lid. "Do you recognize this?"Much more productive today, phew. Will keep plugging away on this one, at least until I hit the end of my outline.
The girl, face gone waxen pale, looked to the boy, who wet his lips before answering. "Sekhmet. Goddess of healing and destruction." His mouth firmed. "And ma'at -- justice."
"Very good!" Rufus replied with a mock-professorial air. "In this context, however, I believe the title 'Lady of Pestilence' is most appropriate."
He observed their reactions to this statement coolly. Although they'd proven themselves self-sacrificially protective of each other, he'd brought them to heel before with a threat to a third party. The box was a less impressive prop to his credibility than he would have liked, but the moment for stupid heroics passed without incident. "What do you want?" asked the girl, finding her voice as she clasped hands with the boy under the table.
There were so very many answers to that question. "Well, for a start," Rufus said as he beckoned to a passing waiter, "pudding."
