So here's me, live-blogging the premiere of The Legend of Korra. WHEE! I AM SO TERRIBLY EXCITED TO SEE THIS!

Aang and Zuko must have let Sokka name Republic City. Just saying.

"Book One: Air." Woot! (Implying ... at least a second book? Pleasepleaseplease!)

Having seen the "Korra, come here!" bit already, I just have to mention that I know this little Avatar in real life: L-prime, daughter of my friends C and J. She already throws water at me when we wash hands in the sink; can fire-bending be far behind? Also, love the patched robe and general sense of working class living going on here. The Southern Water Tribe would need more than a generation to recover to the level of their Northern sibs.

Gorgeous, gorgeous scene-setting and a first action sequence with stellar animation. Also, KATARA. (And I giggle at the implied callback to Aang's response to Jeong-Jeong's agreement to teach him firebending. Aang and Korra: Not So Different.)

Ooh, Naga. I want one. And I love the string section as Korra goes for her ride. The Track Team is really giving this their all.

Tenzin: "I can't tell you how happy I am to see you. Please, help me." Ooh, I can relate.

Kya and Bumi, the crazy ones; Tenzin, the quiet one. (Boy, is he in for it.) I feel for his wife, who looks as harassed as you'd expect from a non-bender coping with bending children and a husband in government service-cum-spiritual leadership.

I like the idea that the White Lotus has "kept Korra safe" to the point of stifling her -- one wonders whether they have a particular idea of what she needs to be kept safe from or if they're just being stuffy. (I'd prefer the former, but we'll see.) Katara gets a wonderful "handing on the legacy" speech, which is directed as much at the audience as at Korra. Kudos to Eva Marie Saint!

It's a car! It's a twenties car! That is just so darn cool.

Okay, love the look of Republic City, so '20s Shanghai or Taisho Tokyo. I thought for sure that Naga was objecting to the smell of the river rather than sniffing after food, though. And can we just give all the background painters Annies right now to save time?

"Took me a while to procure a bush that beauteous." [SPARKLE] Your bush loves you back.

Ha! Yakuza! And some wonderful storyboarding on this fight sequence -- great changes of angle and scope on this and the following chase scene, in addition to the fantastically jazzy soundtrack. Go, Track Team.

Lin Bei Fong takes no s*** from anyone, not even Tenzin (who seems to know that sweet talk irks her). I foresee a lot of Korra/Lin conflict in the upcoming season until they manage to earn each other's grudging respect. Also, who can resist that face, answering the call to public service? Not Tenzin. Group hug!

"Is this your polar-bear-dog, miss?" [SLURP] Priceless. :-)

Ooh, villain. I need to check his VA. (Steve Blum, of course! I knew he sounded familiar.) And am I the only one relating Pema's "I wish one of my children were just normal, not a bender" angst to the Equalists' rhetoric as a context cue that the Equalists are exploiting a felt divergence between benders and nonbenders that has deep roots in this society? Hmmm ...

Tenzin: not into sports.

"A calm, quiet environment, free from any distractions." HAHAHAHAHAHA ... no.

Oh, wow. I love the leaf shot and the following sequence of Jinora wending her way through the panels. Which of course stomp Korra very effectively, with amusing commentary from the peanut gallery. Nice integration of CG animation with hand-drawn here.

Tenzin: NOT INTO SPORTS. Korra: rules lawyer.

Great intro for Bolin, fixing his hair out of focus in the background. "I didn't mean to imply ..." "Oh, you implied it." (And he has crazy fangirls. Of course he does. He's less geeky than his design led me to expect.)

Whoever is writing the sports commentary -- as well as the VA delivering it -- is doing a great job. Also, pro-bending actually looks like a real sport to me, so kudos to its designers.

"You're the Avatar and I'm an idiot." "Both are true."

"Oh, you're still here." "Oh, you're still a jerk."

"You must promise me that your teenage years are nothing like this." "I will make no such promises."

It's narratively logical that Korra should figure out the leaf-on-the-wind thing in the middle of the match, but it's a little under-prepared for by what precedes it, IMO. I mean, she's got no grasp of it at all; then she does. I know we're supposed to understand that it "just clicked" finally after all the unsuccessful practice (which I believe in as a concept), but I wanted more of a sense of clickitude. Maybe a brief, unexpected access of it, followed by a "what was that?" moment, followed by a surer, intended usage. But I realize you've only got so many seconds per episode ...

Tenzin hanging around and discovering his inner sports fan (or at least Korra fan) is great.

And we end with the shot that launches a thousand ships: Mako looking out toward Air Temple Island pensively and Korra looking toward the city with a "whoah, this is SUCH a cool place to be!" expression. Looks like we're potentially in for a classic Beatrice and Benedick set-up (the dialogue is certainly pointing that way). I could go there, but let's wait and see ...

Can't wait for next week! [livejournal.com profile] kanja177 is coming up to watch with me and our younger compatriots L and N. We will have such a good time! (I'm going to make a cake. This occasion deserves cake.)
