Another signal boost. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal over here, the interviewer inquired of the ATLA creators, asking:
If Tenzin is Aang’s son, who is his mother?
And lo! the creators answered him and said:
We can say that, right? ... It's Katara. It's not a huge surprise.
And there was much rejoicing, but also wailing and grinding of teeth.

Lots of good info in this piece, and a refreshingly sensible attitude toward female heroic leads. Share and enjoy.

MY FANDOM HEART IS FULL OF GLEE AND ALL BUT:

So you didn’t follow the casting controversy about the movie version of “The Last Airbender”?

Konietzko: We didn’t head up that film. We’re just happy to be back generating the original content in this mythology, which is what we do.

Very smooth Bryan. (Although I will point out that they are credited as Executive Producers, even if they didn't have a hand in the casting.)

Yeah, I think I might be excited for this series after all.

That use of executive producer is often little more than a courtesy title, though, IIRC. I suspect in this case it's just a nod to the creative talent behind the property being filmed. (Whose silence about this particular take on their work says volumes ...)

I have a feeling I'm going to like this new show even better than the original. I love Avatar, but have been only a casual fan thus far. But a fierce (and from the look of it, HOT) female lead, staying in one vaguely steampunky place rather than roaming around all over? That's just the sort of direction I can TOTALLY get into.

Having read the ATLA art book, I'll hazard that "staying in one place" is a direct result of the experience of writing a world-spanning quest the first time around. I wonder how many of the previous creative team they lured back on board with the promise of no more having to do brand new sets every other episode. :-) (Speaking of which, I really hope they get The Track Team back for the incidental music. I'm still waiting for my ATLA:TAS soundrack, dagnabit!)

Re: Track Team -- they're in (http://lastairbenderfilm.com/2010/07/22/zuckerman-to-score-korra/)! Whoop!

Oh, an excellent point! I hadn't thought of it from the animation standpoint, just the storytelling one. Hopefully it'll be mostly the same team all around, since it worked so well the first time!
