Just doing a signal boost on this one:
Nickelodeon, the number one producer of television animation in the world, has greenlit a new series from the creators of the hit animated TV show Avatar: The Last Airbender, it was announced today by Brown Johnson, President, Animation, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. The new series The Legend of Korra (working title), from creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, will premiere on Nickelodeon in 2011, continuing the evolution of the animated franchise and its mythology ...

"Mike and Bryan have imagined a compelling new story inspired by the Airbender mythology that they so brilliantly crafted when the TV series began," Johnson said. "This new avatar is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world."

The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern "Avatar" world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.
Full press release here. Spunky female lead? Steampunk? Aang's son? Whee! (I can hear the wailing and grinding of teeth from certain sectors of the fandom already over that last one, alas.) But c'mon, Bryke -- "Republic City"? You've got to be able to do better than that. I expect great things of you, gentlemen!

I know -- trapping lightning in a bottle once is feat enough. Twice? On the other hand, this is a team effort, which might improve the chances of getting a good story pulled together.

On another note: YOU'RE ALIVE! I was just wondering about you!

Yep, still kicking. I was away at a seminar all last week; prior to that, I was frantically trying to get ready to leave and am currently frantically trying to catch up with all the stuff that happened while I was gone. (Including a leak in my basement with accompanying demi-flood. Nothing like coming home to that, let me assure you!)

Did you at least get to go anywhere exciting for seminar? I'm getting sent to scenic... New Jersey next month for work. Sigh.

Basements are lame! Although I'm starting to worry because you're the third friend I've heard of this week with this problem. Although one of them actually had a finished basement with her office down there and had to pull up rugs and undo wires and has no internet access and whatnot until it's fixed. So lame.

I think I've decided I'm excited for this new series. Cautiously excited. REALLY like the idea of an anti-bending revolution, that sounds like fun for everyone! And also, this is the second of my fandoms where I've been given canon babies/next gen. *eyes new Rick Riordan book coming out this fall*

Indiana -- the campus was really pretty and I had serious building envy (not to mention collection envy) over their library. And parts of NJ are lovely, says the girl who grew up in one of them. :-)

Ow! I hadn't realized I was part of a trend. The thing that got me was that it was my a/c condenser drain backing up, but since I share that with the condo downstairs, clearing it wasn't covered under my HVAC contract, so I had to pay. I'm nicely asking the downstairs owner to share the cost with me and hopefully she'll kick through.

I just reread The Red Pyramid and have decided that Riordan's next can't come out too soon. Next-gen, done right, is always fun. Cameos from the previous gen FTW, of course. I'd like to think that Toph is still around, and that at least one of Korra's cousins is involved in the anti-bending revolution, in a tech-beats-mystical-gobbledegook way. Family squabbles can be such fun.

Fair Lawn?

And sheesh, when I hear about people having all these problems it makes me slightly less eager to jump the gun and move out already. Hopefully you have a good neighborly relationship with the downstairs owner? *fingers crossed*

I LOVE THE IDEA OF SOKKA'S KIDS BEING MIXED UP IN THIS REVOLUTION. That is AWESOME. See, you say stuff like this, and then I'm really REALLY excited for this series. I just really hope Nick doesn't muck up the schedule again, I really think they mismanaged season 3, which had issues on its own. None of the articles/interviews say it, but I also hope Aaron Ehasz is back too, he's a great writer.

Did you enjoy The Red Pyramid? My flist is decidedly divided on it. Which reminds me - the first chapter of Heroes of Olympus was released a while back, did you see it?

Fair Lawn?

Okay, probably not in one of the most scenic bits of the state, per se, but not too far from some of them. Try shaking loose for long enough to get to High Mountain Park Preserve (http://www.nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/newjersey/work/art4432.html) for a walk.

[buffs nails] Just opening my mind to the possibilities. :-) I'd love to see a shout-out to Teo and his dad somewhere in there, too. (And I wonder which water tribe Korra's from and what it looks like a generation and change down the pike. If things have gone steampunky, that must give the Fire Nation a leg up the developmental ladder -- also the Earth Kingdom and possibly the reconstituting Air Nomads, depending on who the Mechanist's hybrid group of refugees and flyers throws in their lot with. I could see them among the founding fathers of this Republic City, actually. But the Water Tribes might be resource-poor in this environment; they're traditionalists anyway, so I can see them being on the Bending Is Best side of the revolution. Hmmm ...)

Not having cable, I can't really weigh in on scheduling ... but maybe I can make a weekly date with my godchildren for a communal viewing. I'd love to be able to keep up with this one in real time.

I thought one of the articles floated around specified Southern Water Tribe, which makes sense considering Aang's connection there :)

I would also love to see them a generation from now - my post-war thing with Sokka has always assumed that he'd head back to help rebuild. The big characteristic of the Water Tribe is that they adapt to things, and the article makes it seem like everybody is sort of living meshed together in this city so it'll be pretty interesting.

THINGS I WANT TO KNOW: Ursa, and the White Lotus Society. I have no idea how they can incorporate Ursa into this, but they ended the first series on that! We need to know!

Oops! Yes, did enjoy The Red Pyramid -- thought it had an interesting floor plan and an entertaining plot (though the whodunnit elements weren't all that well-camouflaged, but maybe a 12-year-old would think different) featuring characters I could like. Must go looking for the Heroes of Olympus chapter; I might have seen it, but I don't think I read it.

Make sure you read it in the correct order, as I did not and missed the special guest ending.

I was wondering about you as well, so I'm...glad? All is...well?

At any rate, new Avatar could be innnnnteresting. And at least the Spunky Female Lead might have a chance with the creative team.

However, Nickelodeon is the number one producer of television animation in the world?!!?!?! How'd that happen?

Could be better, but I'm hanging in. Too many things to do this week, not enough hours in the day. Bleah.

Yeah, they've been good with the spunky female secondary characters, and it looks like they might be giving her someone more grounded in Tenzin to play off of (and I love a good master-teaching-apprentice relationship, a la Iroh and Zuko). As long as she's spunky and not annoying ...

However, Nickelodeon is the number one producer of television animation in the world?!!?!?! How'd that happen?

BEHOLD THE POWER OF CHEESE! (aka press-release speak. I giggled at that one, too.)

Me, too. I'm thinking the steampunky setting may allow them to pull in a few ideas leftover from their early rounds of thinking about ATLA, Pixar's napkin style. And that worked out pretty well for them ... :-)
