Sniggled from [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog:
Please leave a one-word comment that you think best describes me your favorite thing/person/season/taste/whatever. It can only be one word. No more.

I'll use your word to write you something. It could be a one-sentence, a drabble, or a fic.

Then copy & paste this in your journal so that I may leave a word about for you.
What the hey. I need something to do besides invent backstory for the Pumpkin Scissors universe (why does someone have all the biographies of Gouverneur Morris checked out? I suppose his papers will suffice me, but I'd like to have some context first ...)

I started out writing a drabble and it turned into a short 'fic. This may take a little while ...

don't you love when it does that? I can wait

Here's your first line, at least:
"Ha!" I shouted as another of my Slushballs of Doom hit Annabeth square in the face.
Percy Jackson fandom, of course. How far are you down the series?

oh cool. that should be fun.

Book one. I'm slow (well I had 6 hold books come in at once at the library so...)

Uh-oh. This one's set after book 5. How fast can you read? :-)

I'm actually picking a word that reminds me of you: genuine.

I feel guilty for leaving a word. If you'd like, I have a 1000 words of rough draft I can use to prove that I've really been working for your fic? And then I put it aside because I decided that I could do it better.

What is this Pumpkin Scissors?

[is touched] Thanks! Ficlet sprouting as I type, filled with Irrelevant Capitalization, designed to emphasize the Worthiness Of Its Subject. :-)

I'll wait for goodfic. The important thing was the Help-Haiti part, after all ...

What is this Pumpkin Scissors?

A not-quite-guilty pleasure of mine. It's a reasonably well-drawn, somewhat flatly characterized and slowly (but with enough hints that the author knows where he's going to keep me interested) plotted manga by Iwanaga Ryotaro; Gonzo made it into a very pretty-looking anime a few years back. It's kind of a cross between FMA and Rurouni Kenshin -- doesn't rise to the level of the best work in either yet, IMO, but I'm a sucker for Wounded Guy with a Monstrous Past meets Noble Heroine who Isn't Intimidated by Him and offers him a place to start over, only to become involved in Shadowy, Villainous Plots said Guy can't quite escape. The fandom is miniscule -- as of yesterday, I am the PS category over at FF.net. AO3 has 4 ficlets by someone else. The [livejournal.com profile] pumpkinscissors group here is pretty much dead. I'm beginning to worry that Del Rey may drop their translation and that I'm going to have to buy the original, pick up my Japanese again, and do my own. Ugh.

Funimation.com has the anime (dub only) up for viewing on their website. It's a pretty good dub, though, IMO -- very lively, and one of the last ADV produced before they went kaplooie. None of their Usual Suspects in the main cast (though several drop by to take supporting roles -- Vic Mignogna, in particular, gives a performance as a guest antagonist about midway through that raises the hair on the back of my neck). Adam Dudley and Kaytha Coker, as the male and female leads, occasionally sound like they're straining for the desired effect, but not too often; Gray Haddock, Blake Sheppard and Monica Passley as their support team are pitch-perfect -- Haddock above all has great chemistry with everyone he works with, which is quite a feat given that it's all done single actor by single actor in a booth.

It's not classic stuff, but it's entertaining, as long as the violence and the occasionally facepalm-worthy gender politics don't toss you out of the story.

If my life ever calms down, I may need to check this out.

And yeah, the helping haiti part WAS most important, but I still feel like a slacker. There's nothing worse than working on a fic and having that niggling feeling that you could be doing this better; knowing it's for you just makes me hold my standards even higher. I know what Tyson wants to talk to Percy about, and it's Very Important. I have the conversations plotted very firmly. There's gonna be peanut butter involved. External forces interrupt, which is wonderfully convenient in fic but not in my real life. Excuses excuses. I still feel like a slacker.

*skitters off to check out fic*

Here's a first line for you, while I grovel over the rest of it:
Sometimes the Elric brothers know a lead's worthless, like the Genuine Philosopher's Stone Chips peddled from the back of a medicine wagon, offering Relief For The Thousand Natural Shocks That Flesh Is Heir To (headache, earache, indigestion, constipation, arthritis, colic and, er, female complaints) by Stimulating The Body's Natural Alchemy.
Uh, the glistening part comes later ...
