Well, Depp does have Cherokee ancestry in his background from a great-grandmother, so it's not as if he has no Native American ancestry.

I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot about her, too, if this production makes it any further out of development hell, but when even the 1950's t.v. serial hired Jay Silverheels ... I just don't think they're going to get much traction that way. (Not that it will matter, probably. Johnny Depp is bankable; end of discussion.)

Sadly, I can see the wank coming regardless of the actor, given that the original character was very much a product of the cultural dynamics of the early/mid-20th century. (Though I always thought it was neat that the cartoon version gave him an episode that insinuated he might be one of the trickster archetypes, hanging out with the LR for his own purposes ...)
