Title: Raven's Choice
Fandom: FMA (anime version, in the Balance of Power post-series AU)
Character(s): Ed, OC (for a certain value of O, again :-)
Pairing(s): None
Rating: G
Warnings: None. Retells a specific but not particularly spoilery moment in BoP chapter 16.
A/N: I have no idea where this poem came from; I wrote it as fast as I could to get it out of the way so I could go back to what I was doing when it interrupted me. :-) Crossposted from [livejournal.com profile] nebroadwe to [profile] cbs_crackfic and oh, what the heck, also to [livejournal.com profile] fm_alchemist and [livejournal.com profile] fullservicefma. The worst anyone can do is ignore me, right?

Raven's Choice

Every raven knows Raven, thief
And trickster -- is Raven, sometimes:
Gods know not knowing's a relief;
Want's simpler -- food, sex, shiny dimes --
Fly, roost, wait for it --
For what?
Wait
Till want's darling comes walking by,
Plastic toggles bobbing like bait
In sun-bright hair. Claw free the tie;
Dodge the steel fingers' counterclaim.
No matter how cheap or tiny,
What's his he'll hold, come wind, come rain.
That's why Raven
sees you,
wants you,
hunts you,
dogs you

-- you're so shiny.

Poor Ed... To be cursed with being so -shiny-!

That was a delightful little bit of imagery there!

In more ways than one, although the explicit pointer to that got compressed out of the lyric. By the end of the first quatrain, I was really kicking myself that I'd decided to keep to eight syllables per line. Hopefully the images that remain still point to the meaning properly.

You'd think BoP would be more likely to produce limerick than lyric, but nooo ... :-)

Ahh, yes, trickster Raven...more familiar with Iktomi the Spider and of course, Old Man Coyote but, yeah, Raven's a bad one, too. *laughs* It really sucks to be the favored of a trickster god.

My offline beta's comment was, "I'm really not liking your POV character, but I'm not supposed to, right?" Heh, heh. "Liking" is not something you want to get to doing with any of the Tricksters -- nor "disliking," neither. They're equally fired up by both. A Zen-like indifference is probably your only salvation (although you may then have them following at your heels forever, trying to get some -- any! -- kind of reaction out of you, if you don't manage to bore them silly first. I just reread Uhura's Song by Janet Kagan recently ... )

Coyote snaps at my heels on a regular basis though is much more fond of my ex-roommate. I don't react well enough for the tricksters to find me much fun while she, on the other hand, turns explosive when Things Happen. *grin*

Sounds like one of my ex-roommates. She hates weather, so of course she gets rained on, sleeted on, hailed on and snowed on, while I, who rather enjoy it, live in a disgusting center of calm.

HEE. Your ex-roommate sounds like that throwaway character at the beginning of one of the Hitchhiker books, who was actually Thor's great-great-great-great-umpty grandchild, with weather following him around and showing off for him, much to his utter dismay.

My ex-roomie attracts lightning, too. I always tried to stay away from her and electrical appliances during storms.

*giggles madly*

I spent this past weekend with her and made the comment that we weren't going out at all when it was overcast and grumbly outside.

Hopefully you're not a demigod, though. That way lies all kinds of trouble ... :-)
