Title: Drabble: Helpmeet
Fandom: Princess Tutu (anime version)
Character(s): Raetsel and Charon
Pairing(s): Early, one-sided Raetsel/Charon.
Rating: G
Word Count: 100
Warnings: None.
A/N: I've never been that fond of Raetsel for some reason (her character design, maybe? or the way the story has her infodump Fakir's past on Duck?), but I found that looking into her backstory, when she first began running up the street to Charon's house, made her more sympathetic. Hence this drabble. Crossposted from [livejournal.com profile] nebroadwe to [livejournal.com profile] princesstutu and [livejournal.com profile] tutufic.
Dedication: Still for [livejournal.com profile] fmanalyst, who hasn't complained (yet).

Raetsel's house overflows with family; her visits to Charon's smithy go unmarked at first in the bustle. She's pleased to find somewhere her help is needed and noted -- Fakir demanding seconds, Charon complimenting her mending. Her mother sighs over such charity, but everyone else approves (those poor children, that dear man), so she's there to console and restrain Fakir while Charon butters Mytho's burns.
They give the boys a moment alone together afterward. Standing beside her in the hall, Charon sighs and smiles wearily. Thank you, Raetsel.
His hand finds support on her shoulder and she loves him for it.

Author's Note: Current first-aid for burns advises strongly against using butter on them. In the past, however, this treatment was a standard folk-remedy.

These are always such a lovely little gift when I check my friends page. But, you know, it's time for Mr. Cat.

Oh, ye gods, no, no, no -- not Mr. Cat, please, I beg you. Isn't it enough that he shows up (one ear in motion) in Pas Seul (http://nebroadwe.livejournal.com/25551.html)? I'd have no idea where to begin ...

... okay, that's not true. He's in a restaurant, ordering another Velvet Hammer and lamenting his single state to the bartender, when this beautiful Persian walks in ... oh, I am so going to Writer Hell for this ...

You've got the title in one: "So a Cat Walks Into a Bar" :-)

And the bloody thing's already organized itself an opening passage, Heaven help me:
It's a quiet restaurant in the basement of an old hotel on the Strandgasse, with the down-at-heel elegance of an exiled grand duchess. The food's good, but the drinks are better, and a jazz trio plays set after set in the corner, laying down standards as if they were new. It's the kind of place to which a beleaguered ballet teacher with memories of finer things can retreat on a Friday night -- a place where he can knock himself in the head with a Velvet Hammer and forget his troubles until closing time.

Except tonight it's not working ...
Oh, yeah, Writer Hell. I can feel the flames licking at my toes this very minute ...
