I love my job. Where else can you walk into work on Friday the thirteenth and find sitting on your desk, as a matter of course, twentieth-century composer Jerome Kern's copy of Thomas May's seventeenth-century verse biography, The Victorious Reigne of King Edvvard the Third (Written in Seven Bookes), bound in full calf with gold-stamping and endpaper-marbling and edge-gilding by Francis Bedford, one of Victorian England's most notable binders?

I love the smell of provenance in the morning. :-)

In honor of [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog's natal day, I post this tanka on behalf of Edward Elric:
Stumbling in darkness,
Haunted by whispers until
Light breaks in at last:

Who'd have thought that birthday cake
Could hold so many candles?
What can I say? He's a snarky one, he is.

Many happy returns!
